Rutin, commonly referred to as vitamin P, is a natural compound from the flavonoid group found in various plants. It is present in foods such as citrus fruits, asparagus, tea, and especially in buckwheat, which is one of its richest sources. Rutin is gaining popularity due to its unique properties, making it a valuable addition to a healthy diet. In addition to its dietary benefits, it has been used as a food preservative, stabilizer, and UV absorber.
Rutin is a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, which can cause cell damage and contribute to the aging process. Additionally, it supports the health of blood vessels by increasing their resistance and reducing permeability, preventing swelling and strengthening the circulatory system. This is why rutin is sometimes used as a supportive treatment for conditions such as varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and post-traumatic swelling. Furthermore, rutin has anti-inflammatory properties and supports the immune system. Recent studies suggest that it may also help prevent cardiovascular diseases by reducing the risk of blood clots.
Rutin is often used in conjunction with vitamin C, as it not only supports the action of vitamin C but also enhances its absorption in the body, thereby increasing its antioxidant effects. This was the focus of a study conducted by scientists in Egypt, who examined the synergistic combination of rutin and vitamin C specifically for individuals at high risk for oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. The participants were patients undergoing hemodialysis, a procedure frequently required for those with chronic kidney failure. These patients often experience elevated oxidative stress, which is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants, as well as chronic inflammation, increasing their risk of heart disease and other complications. The study lasted for 16 weeks and included 105 participants, who were divided into three groups. One group received a combination of rutin and vitamin C (specifically, a preparation called Ruta C, which contained 60 mg of rutin and 160 mg of vitamin C taken three times a day). The second group was given vitamin C alone at a dose of 1 g, while the third group received standard treatment without any additional supplementation.
The results indicated that individuals taking a combination of rutin and vitamin C experienced a significant reduction in inflammatory markers, such as TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor alpha), with levels decreasing by as much as 80%. The level of malondialdehyde (MDA), which indicates lipid damage in the body due to oxidative stress, was reduced by 50% in the intervention groups, compared to a 28% reduction in the control group. Vitamin C supplementation was found to increase the activity of GPx (glutathione peroxidase), an enzyme that protects cells from oxidative stress. Notably, the combination of rutin and vitamin C also improved the lipid profile, leading to an increase in the level of “good” HDL cholesterol, which is beneficial for heart health. Rutin has demonstrated its effects on two fronts: it reduces inflammation and protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. When combined with vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, these protective effects are even more pronounced.
These findings emphasize the potential of rutin as a valuable support in both the prevention and treatment of various diseases. It is especially beneficial during times of increased physical stress, such as the autumn-winter season, as it helps bolster immunity, supports circulatory system health, and protects cells from oxidative stress. Due to its versatile properties, rutin is an important component of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, it is advisable to incorporate rutin into your daily routine, both as a natural food ingredient and as a dietary supplement.
